What’s more fun than a day at the Armed Forces History Museum?  The answer is easy – a day at the Armed Forces History Museum AND a ride on a fully restored, World War II M8 Greyhound.  Viewing the museum is an experience in and of itself, but add a ride on this M8 armored car, and you have taken your visit to a whole new level.

Anton T from Lincolnwood, IL wrote – “Better than Busch Gardens!!!  I loved the M-8 ride – AWESOME!”

While often mistaken for a tank, due to its large size turret with a 37 mm cannon, the M-8 is actually considered a 6 x 6 armored reconnaissance vehicle.  The museum’s M8 Greyhound is complete with a Browning .30 cal machine gun (de-milled of course) and other accessories used in WWII.  Your ride is sure to become the main topic of conversation as you convey this incredible experience as part of your museum visit.  A ride on this vehicle leaves a lasting impression for years to come.  Where else can a civilian go and ride on a military vehicle?

Don’t Miss Out

This is a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and is only available here at the museum.  Take the ride of your life as the M-8 takes you “off road” behind our museum.  Planning ahead will be well worth it.

I love it there I suggest that you let people drive all the machine actually I think that is a bad idea but great museum

    • alon2392 says:

Thanks Zach! We think it is a pretty special place as well. While you cannot actually drive the M8, a ride on it is pretty awesome!!

  2. Correa says:

This is the best ride ever. When do you ever get to ride a real WWII armored vehicle.

  3. Cindy says:

What a museum! What a ride! It’s not everyday you can ride an armored vehicle. The ride was great, friendly staff and reasonable prices. Thank you for preserving the memories of so many who sacrificed.

Thanks for taking the time to post on our web-site Cindy. We are pleased to hear you had such a wonderful experience. • alon2392 says:

That would be an excellent surprise Sheila. It is truly an experience. I recommend you call (727) 539-8371 ext. 103. They can give you all the information regarding cost, as well as availability. AFHM says Happy Birthday!

We also have a new T-Shirt with the M8 available for purchase in our shirt. Along with the M8, the t-shirt says “This Is How I Roll”. Hope you get a chance to ride. No one has regretted it yet. You are in for a treat with the M8 ride. Call our front desk at (727)539-8371 and they can handle the reservations for you. Thank you for visiting our web-site and for your interest in the Armed Forces History Museum. We look forward to your visit.

  7. R.D. says:

Are rides available in March 2013? Are tickets the same price as last summer? We’ll have one Senior/Vet, and two teens. Thank you!

    • alon2392 says:

Yes, we are still offering rides on our M8. Currently, the cost for the M8 is $50 for up to three people. I do not see that changing in the foreseeable future. You may want to call ahead once you know the date of your visit to ensure a driver is on staff that day. Thanks! We look forward to your visit.

  8. Karen says:

Just wondering how much is the M8 ride and long is it?
We are travelling to florida from dec 26 until jan 12. Do you need to call I advance to book the m8 tour.

    Thanks

    • alon2392 says:

Currently, the M8 is $50 for up to three people. You get a photo op prior to the ride with some gear. From start to finish it is probably about 20 minutes (all inclusive). It has yet to disappoint. It is a good idea to call ahead. We almost always have someone here Tuesday thru Saturday, but calling ahead will make sure you don’t visit on a rare day when none of our drivers are available. Sundays you do need reservations, but that is the most difficult day to secure a driver. We look forward to your visit. For more information, feel free to email kathy@armedforcesmuseum.com Thanks for visiting our website.

I just took a ride on/in The M8 on 27th November 2013 with two of my VietNam pals (Ages 63 and 70). “Doug” (The Restoration Guru, Custom Welding Artist and Mechanic) gave us our money’s worth!! I’ve been in a regular off-road, 4X4 truck before and The M8 just blows it away. It’s so smooth riding with the independent axle shafts and multi-leaf springs, it’s amazing!! I sat in the front co-pilot hatch while my buddies rode up top in the turret shouting things I cannot print here, as we were having the ride of a lifetime!! You HAVE TO DO THIS–you will not ever forget it or regret it. The Sound! The Fury! The Smell of Axle grease,Steel and Diesel—THE M-8 is Awesome.

      Hi James:

Thank you for taking the time to post your WWII M8 Greyhound experience on our website. Nothing advertises better than the voice of those who have experienced it.

  10. David Sellas says:

I want to take my mom and my brothers for a m8 ride but can’t find any tickets! We Are a family of 4 and want to know the price please help!!!

    • alon2392 says:

The current price for the M8 ride (as of 5/28/2014) is $50 for the first three people and an additional $10 if there is a fourth person. So for your family to ride, it would be $60.00. Please call 727.539.8371 and press 6 for the front desk attendant if you’d like to make a reservation. Thank you for your inquiry. It is really a fabulous ride.

Out of pure curiosity is there anyway to purchase one of these machines or something quite similar, without being enrolled or not being in any armed forces at all. I plan on buying a large amount of land and build a few houses for my friends and I, and we are going to start a garage. One of these M8 Greyhounds would be an awesome vehicle to use for scouting around and looking at our purchased land.

    • Kendrick Lain says:

To add on to what I was saying earlier I wouldn’t be looking for anything with a gun mounted on it, just a very reliable vehicle for scouting. Would anything like an M38 Wolfhound or a Daimler Ferret be possible to purchase. I really appreciate the help. Thanks.

    • alon2392 says:

I know you can often pick up these pieces at auctions. However, keep in mind they are not fuel efficient and if they break down, you need to find parts and know how to repair them. Good luck. I agree, it would be fun to have one to run around some property on, just need to think it through. Thanks for visiting our website.
